The awful weather conditions contributed to a sloppy opening to the game. Both sides struggled to find any rhythm with passes going astray. Dylan Sweeney had the first real sight of goal on 22 minutes, after some good pressure by the midfield duo of O' Neill and Bellew the Saints striker fired over the crossbar.
The visitors took the lead on the half hour mark with a penalty dispatched past James Sheridan in the Saints goal. Sheridan received a yellow card for his late challenge on the Rangers striker which resulted in the awarding on the penalty.
Five minutes before the break John O' Leary was denied by the keeper who saved a one on one with the Saints striker.
The Saints applied some pressure in the second half and the equaliser finally came on 56 mins, when Sheridan’s 40 yard pass found Sweeney through on goal; the winger kept his composure to slot the ball home from an acute angle.
The pressure mounted on the visitors and the Saints took the lead with 20 minutes remaining. Mark Sheridan was once again the creator. His corner found Glen O' Donnell on the edge of the penalty area and the young winger hit the back of the net with a beautiful strike.
In the latter stages of the game Lyons and Hegarty were introduced, and the fresh legs contributed to the Saints standing firm to win the valuable points.
