Debutant Philly Hughes went close to scoring in the first minute when his shot went wide after he was found by Mark O’Neill. Karl Somers was denied by Firhouse goalkeeper Paddy Reilly, Somers shot lacked power and the visiting goalkeeper made a comfortable save.
The visitors eventually settled and started to apply some pressure. Shane Dolan’s cross from the right was headed away by Saints centre half Martin O' Neill, only as far as Darren O’Grady who took a shot that was inches wide of the left post. Hughes went close for the Saints with a header that struck the upright from Garreth Cooney's cross.
On the half hour mark Fee made a brilliant save from Wynne's powerful drive. Dolan continued the attack and hit the crossbar with a curling shot.Late in the half, the Saints were carved open and Fee made a fantastic save to deny Harmo Mercer inside the penalty area. Firhouse broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time when Gary Murphy beat Fee after a dangerous corner.
After the break the Saints were fastest out of the blocks and substitute Keith Dunne played a good ball into Hughes, who in turn laid off Karl Somers but his effort went over the crossbar. One minute later it was 2-0. Forsyth was brought down just inside the area and Dolan tucked away the resulting penalty into the corner of the net.
It was game over a minute later, Mercer picked up the ball wide on the left and hit a superb curler from 35 yards into the top corner. It was a stunning strike that was worthy to win any game of football. The Saints threw everything at the visitors and came close to pulling a goal back when David Somers tried to chip Reilly and was only centimetres over the crossbar.
Brian McCarthy's side were handed a lifeline when a penalty was awarded for handball. Niall O’Reilly took on the responsibility and struck it well but Reilly guessed correctly and pulled off a brilliant save. The penalty missed epitomised an awful day. Nothing was going right.
The Saints were punished further late on with two injury time strikes. Mercer slotted home his second of the game with an emphatic finish and a minute later Peter O’Donnell hit a superb strike from 35 yards out that flew into the top corner. It was a brilliant day for Firhouse, and a miserable day for the Saints.
