LSL Senior Division
Saints goalkeeper Mark Osbourne made a fine save one minute later, standing big he blocked a shot at his near post. Osbourne can be pleased with his debut, he was confident, vocal and he produced some excellent saves. David Somers added his second in the 7th minute with a ruthless finish after he pounced on Lee Dixon's shot that was dragged across the penalty area. Somers doesn't miss chances like that, and the Saints had a perfect start.
Malahide faced an uphill task and that task was monumental when Gareth Cooney made it 3-0 on 16 minutes. Cooney linked up with the industrious Karl Somers and his inch perfect 25 yard chip left goalkeeper Dylan McNulty with no chance. It was a goal of the highest quality from the Saints midfielder. McNulty was struggling with an injury on the half hour mark, and to his credit he battled on despite his obvious discomfort. The visitors rattled the post in what was the last action of the half. Malahide pulled a goal back five minutes after the break when David McElvoy poked the ball home after Osbourne made a save from a powerful drive.,
Keith Dunne restored the Saints three goal cushion two minutes later, when he beat McNulty with a shot that took a slight deflection. Malahide spurned a glorious chance at the back post on the hour mark, when the striker found in space fired his shot wide. David Somers was denied his hat trick on 70 minutes, McNulty did well to smother a shot that was bound for the bottom corner. McElvoy made it 4-2 with 10 minutes remaining when he punished some sloppy defending with a good finish.
The first half performance was exceptional, leads will have to be protected in a more ruthless fashion. The Saints are second in the league behind Crumlin United. Our league season is gathering momentum.
