Killester created the opening chance on 19 minutes when a neat pull back into the penalty area was met by the Killester striker who shot wide. The first goal was always going to be so important and it was Niall O' Reilly who broke the dead lock on 22 minutes slotting a penalty into the back of the net. It was a double blow for Killester with defender Mick Kelly dismissed for hand ball. Killester keeper Gooch Whelan made a very good save parrying David Somers shot. The Saints striker reacted and his goal bound shot was handled by Kelly. The referee was left with no choice but to send off the United defender.
Brian McCarthy's side, playing with plenty of confidence started to dominate the game. Lee Dixon went close on 25 minutes, curling a shot wide. Gooch Whelan made a terrific save to deny David Somers on the half hour mark, the Saints striker pounced on a stray back header and Whelan came to his sides rescue. Niall O' Reilly's second goal arrived on 34 minutes. O' Reilly on the left raced through and slotted the ball past Whelan into the corner of the net. Garreth Cooney was outstanding all afternoon and it was his sublime flick which opened up the Killester defence and set O' Reilly free to score with a very composed finish.
It was nearly 3-0 on the stroke of half time. Mark O' Neill and Lee Dixon carved open the Killester defence. Dixon's low driven cross was met by David Somers who failed to get a good connection. Killester responded forcing Tadhg Murphy into a making a fantastic save on 67 minutes pushing a powerful Killester drive away to safety. Four minutes later Killester who faced a difficult task were left with a mountain to climb. Goalkeeper Whelan was dismissed for bringing down John Reilly. The Saints counter attack ended with the ball in the back of the net but the goal wasn't awarded and Murphy was dismissed.
Credit to the nine men of Killester they threw everything at the Saints and pulled a goal back when Mick Kelly found the back of the net with shot that beat the unsighted Murphy.
The win was secured with five minutes remaining when David Somers scored his ninth goal of the season slotting John Reilly's cross into the back of the net.
The Saints are unbeaten in the last seven league fixtures, picking up maximum points from six of the games. Our supporters left Hadden Park delighted having watched a magnificent performance against a top side.
