LSL Senior Division
Pre-game, St Mochtas were the bookies favourites to take all three points after two victories against their hosts last term and a host a big name signings coming into the Porterstown Road based side over the Summer. The saints however were not the only side with new faces and both sides looked almost unrecognisable to the ones that gained promotion last May.
The result is Home Farm’s second draw from two games while the point is the first for St Mochtas in their first outing of the season.
Straight from the off Danny Crowley’s side did not look overawed by last season’s Senior 1 champions and came close after 5 minutes when Craig Sheridan’s attempted clearance deflected into the path of the ever lively Eoin Doyle whose strike across goal was well saved by Tadhg Murphy.
Although the visitors looked neat and tidy in possession the new-look side didn’t come close until an attempted defensive clearance bounced off David Somers in the box and went just inches wide on 25 minutes. A minute later Niall O’Reilly was brought down on the edge of the box. He dusted himself off to take the free kick and hit a well struck drive that required a good save from Seamus Houghton.
Soon after Home Farm were on the attack and Jack Morley crossed to Doyle who connected with a glancing header that went fractionally wide. Up the other end Gavin Smith drove up the left, crossed perfectly to Reilly who hit it on the the half volley. His effort was saved by Houghton but fell to David Somers whose strike was also saved by the Home Farm shot stopper.
The closest either side came to scoring in the half came with 32 on the clock. Morley’s corner was met by Sean Manley whose downward header just shaved the outside of the post.
In the second stanza Home Farm were on the attack straight from the off and Doyle slipped in Christy Doran on the left edge of the box, his strike though was always rising and went over the bar.
The visitors always looked dangerous in and around the box, especially when David Somers was in possession. His effort on 52 mins looked goalbound but took a deflection that sent it wide.
The best chance of the half fell to the home side with 20 left to play. Donal Coughlan played the ball into Morley on the edge of the box, he laid off to Doyle inside the area whose powerful strike was excellently tipped around the post by Murphy to keep the scores level.
In the closing stages St Mochtas were the team in the ascendancy and looked like the team more likely to grab a winner.
Reilly’s cross was punched by Houghton only as far as substitute Rory O’Connor but the Amateur International striker couldn’t get his foot over the ball and it went well over. Soon after another substitute Ian Croft slipped in David Somers but he was stretching as he shot and it went just wide of the near post.
With the clock ticking down a cross from the right by Niall O’Reilly was left to run by everyone and almost snuck in at the far post but went just wide to the relief of Farm keeper Houghton and the final whistle came soon after leaving both sides with a share of the spoils.
