After a change in the schedule their first game was brought forward and with little time to warm up, the team were caught on the hop in their opening game to Glentoran FC. They found themselves 3-0 down by half time. The team started the second half brightly and after some terrific passing Femi found the back of the net with a well worked team goal. It wasn't long before they had another, this time scored by Alex with a simple tap in from a corner. Despite battling hard the saints couldn't find the equaliser.
In game three, the saints found themselves facing the tournament favourites, College Corinthians. And it wasn't long before the saints found out why they had this tag. Corinthians went ahead with an early goal. The saints did equalise through a tremendous long range strike from Mark Dromey, but before half time they once again fell behind to a Corinthians goal. Corinthians finished the game off in the second half with a third goal. 3-1.
Day 2. The Saints opened the day with a Shield Semi Final against local opposition, Kinsale Boys. It was an end to end game and neither side could find an opener in the first half. Mid way through the second half with Alex through on goal, he was brought down in the box and was awarded a penalty. He calmly stepped up and slotted the ball home for the only goal of the game and a place in the shield final for the saints.
In the final and the opponents were Temple United. The Saints started the game really well and following some quick precise passing between Alex and Filip it wasn't long before they took the lead with a superb finish from Alex. Within 5 minutes the saints were leading 2 -0. This time the goal came from a corner. Femi sent the ball in and up rose Alex Pop, the smallest player on the field to head the ball into the back of the net, and score his second goal of the game. The saints fought hard for the remainder of the game and held on to deservedly lift the Shield and bring it home to Porterstown Road.
All of the coaches and players had a superb weekend. They would like to extend a huge thanks to all of the parents for their help and also to DB Sports for organising a very successful tournament. Our thanks to the team sponsors Westend Barbers & Glenhaze Distribution.
