LSL Division 1
Glen Crowe went close to opening the scoring with a glancing header from Gavin Smith's pin point cross in the 20th minute, it was a great chance for the legendary striker. The first half was finely balanced until Karl Somers broke the deadlock finishing Gavin Smith's free kick at the near post. Smith's delivery was dangerous, Karl's finish was neat, and the league leaders went into the break with a precious lead.
The Saints upped the tempo in the second half, Glen Crowe and Jonathan Lyons both had chances to increase the lead, Crowe with the better chance saw his effort go over the crossbar. The saints were enjoying plenty of possession without finding the second goal. Both sides had penalty appeals turned down, the Saints claimed a handball, Arklow's appeals were for a challenge just after half time.
Arklow had their best spell in the later stages of the second half, and equalised in the 81st minute. Saints captain Craig Sheridan was unlucky and got the final touch on a brilliant corner. The visitors sensing a win threw everything at the Saints, Warren Fee made an outstanding save in the 85th minute to keep the sides level. The saints broke rapidly and John Reilly scored the winner four minutes from time when he slotted the ball home, after a terrific move involving Paul McCullagh and David Somers opened up the Arklow defence. On the balance of play and chances created the saints deserved the three points, Warren Fee's save was instrumental, one minute later it was 2-1, fine margins.
The two sides will meet again next week in Porterstown for the FAI Irish Daily Mail Cup second round tie. Next up is Glenville away in the league on Wednesday. The Saints go marching on..
