LSL Division 1
The league leaders created the best chances with Karl Somers twice going close to breaking the deadlock. Brian McCarthy said : I'm very proud of all the players, it's a fantastic achievement, we have big games to come, and we will be focused until the final game of the season, we have a massive game on Sunday in the cup, and hopefully we can reach the next round".
In a tense first half Glenville created the first chance of the game when a header went over the crossbar. The move down the right was quick and the header just failed to connect with an excellent delivery. Karl Somers went close for the Saints on 20 minutes, his terrorizing run ended with his powerful drive going over the crossbar. Lee Dixon had a good first half, his brilliant free kick in the 25th minute with plenty of swerve and pace had the goalkeeper troubled. The game opened up on the hour mark, both sides were attacking ,although it looked like the Saints posed more of a threat going forward. The league leaders looked to have broken the dead lock when substitute Stephen Deegan's perfect pull back for Karl Somer's was so close to nestling in the bottom corner. It was the best move of the game, as the Saints started to dominate the latter stages of the second half.
Craig Sheridan had a half volley tipped over in the dying minutes, the captain had another fine game. He won every header and was the heart of a very determined and solid defence. Glen Crowe had a penalty appeal turned down in the last minute, a clever chip over the defence by David Somers resulted in the Saints striker on his back after a challenge by the advancing goalkeeper. Appeals were waved away. It looked a penalty but that's football, Swings and roundabouts.
The league title can be wrapped up at home against Verona next Wednesday, three promotions and a Moore Cup is an incredible achievement. St.Mochta's FC will play for the first time in the top tier of LSL Football next season. The squad is in a very healthy place, Brian has assembled a squad that is very talented, experienced and full of gifted young stars who hopefully will carry the club forward. Thanks to Brian, Bobby, Donal, Stefano and our fantastic squad of players.
