FAI Umbro Intermediate Cup - Quarter Final
The strong wind certainly didn't help either side, UCC playing with the wind in the first half had plenty of possession, Sean O' Callaghan was a constant threat with his pace and deliveries. Warren Fee in the Saints goal was rarely tested, he made a good save from distance in the 28th minute, he was confident, solid, and he cleared some dangerous balls in his penalty area. The LSL division 1 league leaders will be disappointed not to have tested the UCC goalkeeper more, a John Reilly shot that went wide in the 38th minute after he found some space from Crowe's pass was the best chance.
We have seen some fantastic attacking football all season, defensively the team were solid with Harrison and Craig Sheridan winning vital headers and intercepting some dangerous crosses into the penalty area. Brian Kelly was the Man of the Match, the Saints right back had an outstanding game, he got forward, won so many tackles and always retained possession. Martin O' Neill simply refuses to be beaten and he covered every blade of wind swept grass. Substitutes Brown and Doran can be pleased with their contributions. It was nervy, tense and two top class sides cancelled each other out, excellent defending and hard work ensured the score-sheet remained goalless.
Brian McCarthy was happy to have another chance to reach the semi final "We prepared very well for the game, I'm not too disappointed with the result, although conditions didn't help, we can play much better, but we are still in the cup and have home advantage, we look forward to the replay".
