LSL Division 1
The league leaders dominated the game after going behind to a Gavin Doyle strike from 20 yards that flew into the top corner in the first minute. It was a frantic start to the game on a night that was perfect for football. The Saints response to conceding so early was excellent, all that was missing was a goal. David Somers spurned a chance in the 5th minute when he dragged his shot wide after a delightful through ball by Reilly. Jordan Lancaster was denied by a brilliant save when his side footed shot that looked destined for the top corner was tipped away to safety. The Saints were enjoying the majority of possession and creating chances, Brian Fitzpatrick hit the crossbar in the 19th minute with a header from Lee Dixon's corner, a goal mouth scramble ensued and the ball was eventually cleared away to safety. St. Francis were under severe pressure as the half wore on with the yellow cards mounting and the corner count for the Saints edging closer to double figures, but somehow the score remained 1-0 at half time.
The Saints continued to lay siege on the St. Francis goal, and it was only a matter of time before the rearguard was broken, it arrived eventually and it was no surprise, that it was David Somers who scored. The home side defended heroically and rode their luck at times, as the Saints searched for a winner. Substitute Glen Crowe nearly won it in the dying minutes when his header went agonisedly past the post from a Karl Somers cross. The home side could have dramatically won in the last minute, Warren Fee produced a great save from a shot outside the penalty area, and when the resulting corner went short, it was game over, and a brilliant point for the home side.
The performance tonight deserved three points but that's football, swings and roundabouts. St. Francis away is always tough. We certainly have performed below par on occasions this season and won. It's disappointing but it could be a very valuable point at the end of the season.
