The Saints had the best of the first half with chances the pick of the bunch arrived in the 25th minute when Stephen Deegan was found by David Somers but he couldn't keep his shot down and the ball went harmlessly over the crossbar. Leixlip's forced Saints goalkeeper Doyle into making some good saves from distance on a couple of occasions. The home side applied some pressure at the start of the second half and they were denied the opening goal when Stephen Deegan cleared the ball off the line from a corner. The home side's appeals for a goal were waved away by the Referee and his assistant who was perfectly positioned to see the ball didn't cross the line.
Paul McCullagh was introduced for Deegan in the 70th minute and his runs from midfield caused Leixlip all sorts of problems. Five minutes later, the Saints had the lead thanks to Karl Somers who scored his third goal of the season. McCullagh went close to scoring his first goal for the club in the 74th minute with a brilliant 35 yard free kick, the United goalkeeper made a fantastic save to tip the ball away from nestling in the top corner.
