LSL Division 1
The Saints had the better of the opening exchange with Jordan Lancaster and Karl Somers testing the Rovers goalkeeper. Luke Harrison went close to opening the scoring in the 9th minute, but the Saints centre half just couldn't manage to steer his header into the back of the net. The Saints were having plenty of possession and looked the most likely to open the scoring. Lancaster clipped a free kick off the crossbar in the 15th minute, it was a good free kick although the Rovers goalkeeper had it covered. The deadlock was broken five minutes later when a penalty was awarded for handball and David Somers made no mistake with an emphatic penalty. Conditions were awful for football, but credit to the players, both sides played some nice football. Broadford had a good spell of pressure just after the half hour mark and Saints goalkeeper Warren Fee made a fantastic safe at his near post to keep the Saints lead intact. The Saints finished the half the stronger with John Reilly going close and rattling the crossbar after a brilliant run on the left.
Broadford went very close to equalising just after half time when a header from a free kick went wide. Nathan Brown had a goal bound shot deflected wide in the 50th minute, it was a beautiful move and a superb block by the Rovers defender. Broadford had to gamble and threw everything at the Saints who always posed a threat going forward. The Saints were very solid and composed and the win was sealed in the 89th minute when David Somers scored his second of the game when he was found in space by a sublime Martin O'Neill pass, and his shot flew into the top corner to the delight of the home crowd.
The Saints remain unbeaten and go top of the table. Brian McCarthy has assembled a big talented squad and he's utilising it very well. The win delighted the Saints manager " I'm delighted with the win, the lads were fantastic against a very good side, conditions were tough for both sides, it's another fantastic result, we like to play football but we can also mix it and dig out results, we go top but we won't be getting carried away".
