LSL Division 1
The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges with Saints goalkeeper Warren Fee tipping a header over the crossbar in the first minute of the game. Brian Snowe and Crowe linked up well to create the Saints first chance of the game in the 10th minute, Hilliard was found inside the penalty area, but he couldn't manage to keep his shot down and it went over the crossbar. Fee made a great save at his near post in the 18th minute and both sides threatened to score the all important first goal with Hilliard denied two minutes later from a good save by Deegan. The visitors hit the top of the crossbar with a header from a corner on in the 20th minute, Fee in the Saints goal had it covered. Sacred Heart were playing with plenty of confidence after their 4 -0 win against Glenville on Wednesday night always looked very good going forward. Gary Hilliard had the Saints best chance of the half just before the break, his shot went over the crossbar much to the relief of the visiting side.
Luke Harrison made a very good block in the 53rd minute and the Saints centre half had a fine game. O' Brien replaced Snowe in the 55th minute and was replaced himself four minutes later by Jordan Lancaster after picking up a hamstring injury. It was a blow and Aaron's season hasn't got going. He's worked hard over the summer to build on his fantastic season last year, he will be very frustrated, but he will have a big part to play this season. The game started to become more open as both sides looked to score the opening goal and it arrived in the 63rd minute when Hilliard found Smith with a beautiful pass, Smiths cross into the penalty area was very dangerous and Lancaster steered the ball into the corner of the net.
Crowe was denied by a brilliant save in the 69th minute as the Saints pressed for a goal that would give the team some breathing space. Crowe forced Deegan in goal to make a good save from a header in the 71st minute. Lancaster and Karl Somers, both had chances with the Sacred Heart goalkeeper making a good save from Somers. Sacred Heart had a great chance to equalise in the 83rd minute but the forwards shot went inches past the post. Nathan Brown came on in the 82nd minute for Gary Hilliard and the recent signing from Shamrock Rovers looks a very good player. Crowe had an appeal for a penalty turned down with five minutes remaining when he appeared to be pushed in the back. Sacred Heart who equalised against the Saints late in the first game of the season threw everything at the Saints and Luke Harrison made a superb tackle in the deep into injury time to secure the important three points.
It was a good entertaining game of football, the first goal was so important. Sacred Heart didn't get the goal while on top and the
Saints probably should have killed the game off after scoring. It's a brilliant start to the season. It was a very tough game and the Saints showed plenty of character to pick up all three points.
